For patients without insurance coverage, we offer self-pay arrangements. Our social worker can also help you explore financial assistance programs.

Medicare and Dialysis

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is one of the only medical conditions that qualifies a person for Medicare regardless of age. If you are diagnosed with permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis, you are eligible for Medicare even if you are under 65 and would not otherwise qualify.

Medicare Part B covers 80% of the approved amount for outpatient dialysis services, including in-center hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis supplies and training. You are responsible for the remaining 20% coinsurance, which is often covered by a secondary insurance plan, Medicaid, or a Medigap supplemental policy.

Medicare also covers related services including certain lab tests, medications administered during dialysis, and kidney disease education. For home peritoneal dialysis, Medicare covers the cycler machine, dialysate solution, and all necessary supplies.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. These plans provide at least the same coverage as Original Medicare but may have different networks, copays, and additional benefits like dental or vision coverage.

Not all dialysis centers participate in every Medicare Advantage network. Crown Dialysis Center is in-network with major Medicare Advantage plans in South Florida, including Humana, Aetna Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, AvMed, and Preferred Care Partners. Being in-network means lower out-of-pocket costs for you.

If you are on a Medicare Advantage plan and want to transfer to Crown Dialysis, our team will verify your network status and confirm your benefits before scheduling your first treatment. If your plan requires a referral or prior authorization, we handle that coordination for you.

What If I Don't Have Insurance?

A kidney failure diagnosis does not have to mean financial hardship. There are multiple pathways to coverage, and our team is here to help you find one.

ESRD Medicare Eligibility

If you have been diagnosed with permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis, you likely qualify for Medicare regardless of your age. Coverage typically begins after a short waiting period, and our team can help you apply.

ACA Marketplace Plans

The Affordable Care Act marketplace offers health insurance plans during open enrollment. A new ESRD diagnosis may also qualify you for a special enrollment period. These plans cannot deny you coverage for a pre-existing condition.

Medicaid

If your income is below certain thresholds, you may qualify for Medicaid, which can cover dialysis costs with little or no out-of-pocket expense. Medicaid can also serve as secondary insurance alongside Medicare.

American Kidney Fund

The American Kidney Fund provides financial assistance for health insurance premiums, treatment costs, and other expenses related to kidney disease. Our social worker can help you apply.

Social Worker Assistance

Every dialysis patient at Crown has access to a renal social worker who specializes in connecting patients with financial resources, insurance enrollment, and community support programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicare cover home dialysis?
Medicare Part B covers peritoneal dialysis, including supplies, equipment, and training. Medicare does not currently cover nurse-assisted home hemodialysis. However, staff-assisted home hemodialysis — like the program offered by Crown Dialysis — can be covered by private or commercial health insurance, some managed care organizations, Medicaid, or self-pay arrangements. Our team can help you determine what your specific plan covers.
When does Medicare coverage start for dialysis patients?
If you have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Medicare coverage typically begins the first day of the fourth month after you start dialysis. However, coverage can begin on the first day of dialysis if you participate in a home dialysis training program or if you receive a kidney transplant. If you have employer group health insurance, it remains your primary coverage for the first 30 months, with Medicare as secondary. After 30 months, Medicare becomes primary.
What does my copay or coinsurance cover?
Medicare Part B covers 80% of the approved amount for dialysis services. You are responsible for the remaining 20% coinsurance, plus the annual Part B deductible. Many patients have secondary insurance — such as Medicaid, a Medigap policy, or employer coverage — that covers some or all of this out-of-pocket cost. Our billing team can review your specific coverage and estimate your costs before you begin treatment.
Can I keep my private insurance while on Medicare?
Yes. Many dialysis patients have both Medicare and private insurance. During the first 30 months of ESRD-based Medicare eligibility, your employer group health plan (if you have one) is the primary payer, and Medicare is secondary. After 30 months, Medicare becomes primary. You can also purchase a Medigap supplemental policy to help cover the 20% coinsurance that Medicare does not pay.
What if I don't have any insurance?
If you are diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease, you may qualify for Medicare regardless of your age. You can also apply for Medicaid if you meet income requirements. The Affordable Care Act marketplace offers plans during open enrollment or through special enrollment periods triggered by a qualifying life event. The American Kidney Fund provides financial assistance for insurance premiums and treatment costs. Our social worker can help you explore all available options.
